About the book

The first author of the term “ecology” is uncertain, though several writers used it in the mid-nineteenth century. Many biologists grant credit to the Germany biologist Ernst Haeckel, who used the term in 1866 to refer to the interrelationships of living organisms and their environment. A few years earlier, in 1857, Henry David Thoreau also spoke of ecology among other fields of biology and natural history, but he apparently did not provide a definition of the term. In any case, the origins of ecologic knowledge are much older than either Haeckel or Thoreau, and date to the origins of biology itself even though the word was not used until the nineteenth century. Rooted firmly in the  principles of ecology, the agricultural enterprise, even though having been exposed to the impact of environmental problems arising from land degradation, soil erosion, groundwater depletion and pollution and loss of biological diversity has so far stood firm and degradation, soil erosion, groundwater depletion and pollution and loss of biological diversity has so far stood firm and survived to meet the food requirement of the growing population, so much so that there have been some striking instances of food glut in several countries, including some that used to suffer famines only half a century ago. Plant ecology is a branch of the scientific field of ecology which focuses specifically on plant population. There are a number of applications for plant ecology, ranging from helping people develop low water gardens to studding endangered ecosystems to learn about how they can be protected. The basic nature of environment and its interrelation and interdependence to plants, men and animals are explained throughout. After reviewing the environmental issues and international attempts in its protection, the important components like water, air and soil are explained.
