Water has always been an integral feature of domestic interiors, whether it takes the shape of a luxurious built-in pool and cabana, or a rudimentary structure above ground. The sound of splashing water is firmly in our psyche. Memories of Mum calling from the house. 'I think you've had enough now', are as clear as the sky-blue flies that lined many of these swimming pools during the 1970s. Three decades later, the colour of the flies has changed, and water may appear on the edge of the living room, at the entrance or even within the home itsel.
When Stephen Crafti began writing about architecture and design in the early 1990s, he didn't really think of it as a career. Inspired by the architecture around him in Melbourne, Australia, Crafti was keen to share the things he saw with others, be it a building, a piece of furniture or a piece of contemporary jewellery. After more than a decade of sharing his 'favourite things' and with numerous books behind him, Crafti still delights in discovering and promoting designs that he considers exhilarating. The experience of living in a modernist 1950's home was the impetus for what is now a full-time obsession. 'When you are fortunate enough to live with great architecture, you really are your own home, you can enjoy looking at the masterpieces newspapers and leading Australian design magazines. H2O Architecture is Crafti's eighth book with The Images Publishing Group.
