'It may well be that a small space is a greater challenge to an architect than larger volumes. Where a residence is concerned, numerous functions, some of them private and some public must be provided for. How does one make room for a bed, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom with 30 square metres, for example - and above all how, can these very different spaces be blended together without interference or inefficiency?

The difficulties are often compounded by the correspondingly small budgets allotted to limited spaces. This book seeks to give an overview of the ways in which talented architects solve the problems and create original solutions. Not all of the projects presented in this book are residential - there are bank facilities, a museum, or a jewellery shop, and even a small tower located in Tokyo, but the common factor is that their total floor area is no bigger than 100 square metres.'
