About the book
In studying a course of quantitative analysis, a part from theory and practice, much time is devoted to the study of the various calculation procedures relating to chemical analysis. The mastery of such calculations must be based entirely on the student’s self- study. The present problem book is designed as an aid in this field of quantitative analysis.
Problems are arranged in sections corresponding to those of a course of quantitative analysis. It should be stressed, however, that there are a number of problems of a general character, whose solution is important not only in a particular section but in others as well: for instance, Gravimetric Analysis includes problems dealing with the weighing of substances, with the application of the various methods of expressing the composition of substances (pages 47-69), etc.
Solutions to problems are preceded by concise directions; it is assumed that the student has already acquired a knowledge of the appropriate sections in his textbooks.
The problems are largely provided with detailed answers containing brief directions by which the solution can be achieved. This serves a dual purpose. First, the student can check up quickly the course of the solution since the detailed answer permits limiting the solution to a general expression from the data given and omitting arithmetic operations. Second, the detailed solution clearly shows how the problem is to be solved most correctly and in the shortest way possible. Explanations to answers provide the specific features and general methods of solution of problems of a given type.
