Quick Overview

The history of India’s achievement of independence is replete with the events of revolt, revolutions, uprisings, mutinies and consequent suppression by the British colonial masters. Yet each act against colonial rule was a flash of freedom, which would come one day to the people of our country. It was an epic struggle of the world’s second largest population for its liberation from the yoke of tyranny, from the largest empire ever created by an elien race. The epic involved varying roles enacted by political leaders, entire population broken into communities and most importantly; the Indian soldier. The triumph of freedom finally soldier. The triumph of freedom finally came with the precipitous collapse of the British Raj. Our, battle, political or that of a soldier against the British, contributed handsomely towards our independence. Whereas the power of the political movements in gaining independence has always been accepted unequivocally, the contribution of the ‘soldier in uniform’ has rarely been analysed and given its rightful place in history. The book is a research work to establish, based on historical facts and documentary evidence, as to how the spirit of nationalism of the–then Indian soldier germinated giving rise to major mutinies disillusioning the British about their trust on the Indian military. The Indian National Army, though utterly failed at the battle front, did succeed in not only uniting the country but also in creating an unparalleled wave of sympathy among the regular troops of the Indian military. The fast diminishing confidence in the Indian soldier, their only instrument of governance compelled the British to concede independence to our country.
